Brain Injury Survivor's Guide Travel Planning

Air Travel Security

Air travel security guidelines are subject to change from time to time as the world deals with needed security issues.

There are different regulations for carry-on luggage and checked luggage.

Carry-on Luggage

  • Each passenger is allowed ONE carry-on bag
  • Each passenger is allowed ONE 1-QUART clear plastic food storage bag for liquid and gel products such as such as shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency
  • Liquid and gel containers in the CLEAR PLASTIC BAG must not be larger than 3 ounces.
  • Exceptions:
    • Baby formula, breast milk, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, or aerosols) can be in containers larger than three ounces, and do not have to be inside of a quart sized plastic bag, but have to be declared at the security checkpoint.
    • Gel-filled medical devices such as bras and prosthetics are also excluded from this ban.
    • Solid cosmetics and personal hygiene items such as lipstick in a tube, solid deodorant, lip balm and similar solids. Please remember these items must be solid and not liquid, gel or aerosol.

Previously prohibited items that are now allowed: cigarette lighters, up to four books of safety matches, scissors that have a cutting edge less than four inches (10cm).

Once you have passed through security, you are free to buy liquid gel products of any size within the secure areas of the airport terminal and take them on the plane.

Always check the latest regulations before flying. You should be able to find the most up-to-date information from the airport website where you will begin your flight. You can click here for our list of airport websites.

Checked Luggage

It is always best to make sure that each piece of your checked luggage weighs less than 50 pounds. If you are flying out of the United States, you will pay extra if your bags exceed the weight limit.

This link will allow you to download the latest (August 2007) TSA brochure of allowed and prohibited items.
