Brain Injury Journal

A Brain Injury Journal Helps with Memory Problems

Short-term memory problems almost require that a daily memory journal be kept. A daily journal is the same thing as the "spiral notebook" we mentioned in Brain Injury Survivor's Guide.

"Knowledge is Power to a Brain Injured Person"

There are many books on the market written by or about persons whose lives were changed by brain injury. Those who have achieved a successful lifestyle mention the need for lists and notes.

And most of them mentioned not remembering where their notes were from time to time. Writing notes in a Daily Journal makes sure your notes are all in one place. Keeping your Daily Journal with your Planner helps keep you organized and knowing where to find the things you need.

(Note: If you have a copy of our book, you know how to set up your planner. If you have not already done so, you can download for free our sample Planning Pages in pdf format and print them from your home computer. Click here to download the Planner Pages.)

Writing in your journal has another major benefit. It helps you track your thoughts, the things you do, and it provides a way for you to see your improvement. One thing Courtney Larson mentioned in her book, I Can't Remember Me, was that she was able to see a dramatic change in her hand writing. She was able to see she was getting better at writing.

Jim Connelly's book about Donna Jones, One More Sunset, contains many of the notes Donna wrote in her Daily Journal during several years. Not only did she write what she did during the day, she wrote her thoughts about how things were going in her life.

Many of the notes Beth wrote helped us accurately remember the many things going on in her life after brain injury. Her notes played a big role in our writing Brain Injury Survivor's Guide.

What Should You Write in Your Daily Journal?

  • Write down anything you want to remember later.
  • Write down anything you need to do later.
  • Write down names of people you meet and information about them.
  • Write down your thoughts about your day.
  • Write down your thoughts about your brain injury.
  • Write down anything you want to say to someone later.

Just write. Writing will help organize your thoughts. No, it does not matter if those thoughts are organized when you actually write them down. What matters is that you will begin to get more and more organized in your thinking as you write.

Exercising your brain is as important as exercising your body to help establish your new lifestyle. It does not matter whether you are any good at it or not. Take one step at a time and one day at a time. Never Give Up!
