Lead paint poisoning can cause brain injury in children. The bad effects of lead-based paint has been known for over 100 years. The use of lead-based paint was banned in the United States in 1978.
Toys Containing Lead Paint in 2007?
Recent news reports and toy recalls have revealed that over 80% of the toys sold in the United States are "made in China", and many of those toys contain lead-based paint.
I will leave it to lawyers and watch dog groups for laying blame where it should be laid. After all, brain injuries with their memory problems and cognitive and behavioral issues affect many lives regardless of who is at fault.
I encourage toy sales companies and the United States government to take whatever steps are necessary to get rid of any toys containing lead-based paint.
The family of visitors to this website know and understand the effects of brain injury better than anyone in the world. We live with it each and every day. Personally, I don't care if every toy importer is put out of business. Get rid of lead-based paint toys!
Toys containing lead-based paint are illegal. It is already against the law to sell these toys in the United States. Any company who has imported toys contained lead-based paint has violated the law.
Effects of lead-based paint poisoning in children:
- Brain damage
- Learning disabilities
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Decreased IQ
- Encephalopathy (brain swelling)
- Hyperactive behavior
- Cognitive problems
- Behavioral problems
- Organ failure
- Death
Lead-based paint poisoning from children's toys is completely preventable. Sadly, it was thought that it had already been prevented by making them illegal.
Once again, I encourage the United States government to take steps to make importing these illegal toys too expensive for any company to consider doing so.
Lead-based paint poisoning is not limited to illegal toys. Many houses built before 1978 contain lead-based paint. And, of course, there are other sources of lead in our environment.
It is important for parents to have a blood-lead test performed on their children regularly, at least until the children reach age 7.
Brain injury is always unexpected. It is always unwanted. And it cause life-long problems. It is important to minimize our chance of sustaining a brain injury by knowing the risks and steps we can take to protect ourselves as much as possible.
