Hobbies can enhance both cognitive and memory skills. A hobby can also provide a positive outlet for behavioral improvement. Most importantly, however, a hobby provides a ready answer to the number one question on a person's mind after brain injury.
What do I do today?
A hobby can provide "something to do" and, at the same time, be very beneficial for both the person who has suffered a brain injury and family caregivers. Hobbies provide an excellent opportunity for establishing open, honest communication that is non-threatening to all involved.
Hobbies can be educational. Hobbies assist developing memory skills because they involve repetition. Hobbies assist with cognitive skills because they provide an isolated area of concentration.
Having a hobby can also provide hours of stress-free activity. Time spent on a hobby can be both pleasurable and productive. Over time, hobbies can even provide a source of income.
How many writers do you suppose began writing as a hobby? How many photographers did the same? What about the millions of people earning money on eBay?
A hobby can be something as simple as working crossword puzzles or playing with model cars or toy trains. It can be as simple as taking photos and organizing them into albums. Scrapbooking is another popular hobby.
The popularity of the mini series Roots brought life to another hobby. All over the world people are researching their family history. Genealogy research is big business today. There are even free downloads of software for building a family tree.
Photography is my favorite for several reasons. Digital cameras are very inexpensive now. Even the 8 megapixel cameras needed for professional-type photos have come way down in price. Photo software comes with the camera. The cable needed to connect the camera to a computer comes with the camera.
A photography hobby can easily be turned into an extra source of income, and who doesn't need an extra source of income? Photos and photo albums are an excellent memory maker. Old photos can jar old memories and new photos can help create new memories.
