You are not fully clothed until you're wearing a smile. Each and every day brings many opportunities for us to smile. Smiling is good for everyone, both you and the person with whom you share your smile.
Dr. Glen Johnson, Clinical Neuropsychologist, states in his eBook, Traumatic Brain Injury Survival Guide, "One important predictor of how well people do is a sense of humor. I believe that humor is an essential component to getting better."
Dr. Johnson is Clinical Director of the Neuro-Recovery Head Injury Program in Traverse City, Michigan. You can learn more about him in our Resources section.
People who have suffered a brain injury, though, sometimes find it difficult to smile. That's perfectly natural. As memory, cognitive and behavioral problems become more and more evident, it's as though the world has turned upside down.
An upside down world causes an upside down smile, or a frown. It may be difficult to find something in your life to smile about. It may be difficult to find any humor in things around you. Everyone who has been affected by brain injury needs to stop for a moment and look for humor. Look for a reason to smile.
Remember, you're not fully clothed until you're wearing a smile.
Just think about the young man who was speeding down Main Street when a policeman pulled him over.
The young man looked at the officer, "There is a very good reason I'm in a hurry."
The policeman glared down at him, "I don't care. I don't want to hear any excuses. You just follow me to the jail and you can tell the chief."
"But, you don't understand," the young man pleaded.
"And I don't care," the officer said. "Follow me."
A few hours later, the police officer walked by the cell where the young man sat. "You know, you're really pretty lucky. The chief is at his daughter's wedding, and he'll be in a good mood when he gets here."
The young man glared at the officer. "I don't think so. I'm the groom."
