Although many might not realize, not all dentists are trained to perform the same procedures. While a cosmetic dentist is trained to carry out the same procedures that a general dentist can, their expertize extend beyond this. Here, we’ll look at what some of the most common procedures in cosmetic dentistry are.

Common Procedures in Cosmetic Dentistry

1) Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays, also referred to as indirect fillings, is a procedure used when teeth start to decay, but a filling isn’t suitable. The inlays are set onto the surface of the teeth as long as no real damage has been done. Onlays are required when the teeth have been damaged. Although they used to be made from gold, inlays and onlays are now formed using porcelain and ceramics. They work to provide support and stability, and strengthen teeth, while also improving their shape so that no damage will be done.

2) Composite Bonding

When teeth have suffered decay or become discolored, composite bonding can be helpful. The tooth is drilled, followed by the composite being set onto the teeth’s surface. The dentist will then sculpt it so that its shape fits into your mouth. This process enables the damage to become covered, making it appear as though your teeth are clean and normal. It can be used when teeth are cracked, worn, or starting to decay. Composite bonding is relatively cheap when compared with other cosmetic dentistry procedures.

3) Whitening

This is a very common procedure and generally only requires a one-off appointment to be completed. Plaque is removed from the teeth, leaving them looking healthier. Stains and plaque are often caused due to poor diet and lifestyle habits, and sometimes even from taking medication.

4) Veneers

Veneers are mostly formed from ceramics. These caps are placed over your teeth and give them a life-like look. When the enamel has become cracked or damaged or gaps have formed between the teeth, veneers can be very effective. An adhesive is used for the veneer to sit perfectly in front of the teeth.

5) Implants

Implants are required in place of teeth that a person has either lost or suffered damage to. A screw is placed into the jaw at the location of where the tooth originally was. Implants fit perfectly into the teeth as a whole.
